Story of Redivs
Project type
Art Installation
Date
December 2025
Location
UCL, London
The Story of Redivs is a speculative fiction set in a future where resource exhaustion and monoculture farming have caused a global food crisis. As bacterial wilt poisons farmland, governments turn to science for survival. Mira, a bioengineer, is sent to investigate landfills for overlooked solutions to food production.
There, she discovers a creature evolved from waste, later called Redivs, that thrives on trash and produces plastic-digesting enzymes. When scientists adapt these enzymes for human biology, a radical solution emerges: a cyclical system in which humanity survives by consuming its own waste.
What begins as a scientific breakthrough becomes politically and culturally contested. The story culminates in a provocative question: if a true solution to consumerism existed, would we accept it?
The narrative is accompanied by a kinetic installation of a Rediv made from recycled materials. Through direct interaction with the creature, the audience mirrors Mira’s discovery, blurring the boundary between fiction, science, and participation.
